General Motors will end production of the iconic Chevrolet Camaro in January as it focuses on its transition to an electric lineup.

Introduced in 1966 and now in its sixth generation, the Camaro’s spirit could revive in another form, the company suggested without giving any detail.

The performance model, whose industry peers include the Ford Mustang, isn’t at the end of its story, though, said Chevrolet Vice President Scott Bell in a press release.

Its sales and those of other American muscle cars, have declined in recent years.

Along with many other carmakers, GM has set a goal of phasing out all gas-powered models next decade as part of the industry’s transition to electric and other alternative-fuel vehicles, pressured by a growing list of state government internal-combustion-engine bans to mitigate effects on the environment.
