Honda is expanding its development with General Motors of hydrogen fuel cell technologyc, as well as its overall hydrogen business, the latest product of which will be a new CR-V model that’s scheduled to be in showrooms next year in North America and Japan.

The CR-V is based on a model introduced last year in North America and features Honda’s next-generation fuel cell system. It has a plug-in function for home recharging.

Honda plans to also start selling the fuel system externally in the mid-2020s, with an eye to “realization of a carbon-neutral society,” it said in a press release. The Japanese automaker is targeting double the fuel cell durability and a third of the cost, then aims to halve that reduced cost.

In addition to passenger vehicles, Honda has also identified commercial vehicles, construction machines and stationary power stations as users of the fuel-cell technology.

The company said it plans to achieve carbon neutrality, or “zero environmental impact,” for all Honda products and corporate activities by 2050.
