Former General Motors president Lloyd Reuss, father of current President Mark Reuss, died on Friday at 86.

The elder Reuss worked for the Detroit-based carmaker for nearly 40 years, starting his climb as an engineer in 1957, becoming chief engineer of Chevrolet and Buick, and ending as president from 1990 to 1992, according to news reports.

During his tenure, he supported development of an all-electric concept vehicle and led GM’s passenger-car groups before leading its North American operations and global automotive components.

He retired from the carmaker after being ousted following two years of company leadership.

Following his career, Reuss became involved in charity work, including Detroit-based nonprofit organization Focus: HOPE, which provides education and training in largely minority communities, staying with the group for more than 20 years, according to an Automotive Hall of Fame Distinguished Service Citation he received in 2006.
