Ford Holds Best-Seller Status in Used Market

The Detroit-area automaker's F-150 remains the No. 1 used vehicle and the best-selling used truck on the market, but it's falling in popularity on a state-by-state basis.

Based on analysis of over nine million used-car sales between 2020 and 2025, iSeeCars' 2025 Most Popular Used Cars ranking has no big surprises.

“If you like stability in your rankings, this year’s list of most popular used cars will make you happy,” said iSeeCars Executive Analyst Karl Brauer. “The rankings show minimal variations from 2024, though the dominance of full-size trucks is shrinking.”

The Ford F-150 is once again the No. 1 ranked used vehicle on the market and is also tops in the used truck sector. However, its popularity is slipping on a state-by-state basis.

“More states are rejecting the Ford F-150’s popularity, which is likely a reflection of higher fuel prices and more capable midsize truck alternatives in recent years,” Brauer said. “The F-150’s number one ranking has fallen from 34 to 28 states in the past two years, suggesting a drop below 50% of all U.S. states is coming.”

One notable change in 2025 came in the Chevrolet Malibu jumping 21 spots to the eighth most popular used vehicle of the year. iSeeCars speculated that could be because rental car agencies released Malibus into the used market, replacing them with sedans still in production after production of the Malibu ended last year.

Tesla holds the top two spots in the used electric vehicle market, but the Ford Mustang Mach-E and Volkswagen ID.4 jumped to spots three and four, knocking the Tesla models S and X to spots five and six.

iSeeCars predicts that the rising price of new cars will keep the demand for used cars high in 2026. And, like Carfax recently reported, it expects a steady stream of EVs to come off lease and enter the used-car market in the new year.
