Ford and its Canadian workers union reached a tentative contract deal, averting a strike across the border from the United Auto Workers strike against Ford and two other carmakers in Detroit.

The potential deal would cover 5,600 workers at Ford’s plants and parts distribution centers in Canada, the union said.

“We believe that this agreement will solidify the foundations on which we will continue to bargain gains for generations of autoworkers in Canada,” said Unifor National President Lana Payne in a press release.

Negotiations between Unifor union members and Ford and its Detroit-area cohorts, General Motors and Stellantis, started Aug. 10, and Unifor picked Ford as its target on Aug. 29.

Details of the tentative agreement weren’t announced by the two sides. It will next be reviewed by Unifor rank-and-file before ratification.

Meanwhile, the UAW strike against the “big three” Detroit brands neared the close of its first week, with no end in site and some testy back and forth between the union and GM CEO Mary Barra over her compensation.
