More than 150,000 plug-in hybrid Jeeps have been recalled for a second time due to an unresolved battery issue, and owners have been urged to park them outside and refrain from recharging them due to fire risk.

The problem affects some 2020 to 2024 Wranglers and 2022 to 2024 Grand Cherokees.

It stems from internal failure of the high-voltage battery. Some of the recalled units may have battery packs with cells vulnerable to separator damage, a recall notice on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s website indicates.

Dealers will update the battery pack software and replace the battery pack assembly if needed. Recall notices are scheduled to be mailed to consumers on Oct. 17.

Meanwhile, affected vehicles should be parked outdoors and away from structures, as a fire could ignite even when they’re parked, in addition to while in motion.
