The National Highway Traffic Safety Institute is examining a Ford recall of 2021 and 2022 Mach-E electric sports-utility vehicles after reports that repaired units still had issues.

Ford recalled about 49,000 model 2021 and 2022 Mach-Es in June of last year over a battery overheating issue that can increase the risk of an accident.

Since the recall, NHTSA said it’s received a dozen consumer complaints of Mach-Es that experienced the issue after recall repairs.

The issue in the Mach-Es involves battery contactors that can overheat while driving as a result of DC fast-charging and “repeated wide-open pedal events.” The overheating can cause a contactor to open while the vehicle is being operated, leading to loss of power and the possibility of a crash.

Ford repaired recalled vehicles via software updates. After the recall, it issued a technical service bulletin to replace a high-voltage battery junction box.
