Tesla's updated Model Y in China aims to better compete with local rivals with improved configurations at the same starting price, according to news reports.

A post on the automaker's WeChat account announced changes that include faster acceleration, a new wheel design, and added ambient lighting. According to the post, the starting price for the Model Y base model remains 263,900 yuan (slightly over $36,000).

Tesla needs the better Model Y in China to compete with domestic rivals. China's BYD Co. aims to sell three million vehicles this year, while rivals Nio and Xpeng plan to expand their lineups, Fortune reported.

Tesla already revamped the Model 3 in September, with a sleeker look, longer range, and lower prices on premium vehicles, all to boost sales., the article concluded.
