Toyota will help test a fast hydrogen fueling station in Dubai, state oil company Abu Dhabi National Oil said.

The station will test “clean” hydrogen-fuel fleet vehicles supplied in part by Toyota.

Toyota has invested in hydrogen-powered vehicle technology as an alternative to gas and electricity, though in the U.S., California is the only state with a hydrogen fueling infrastructure to speak of.

The United Arab Emirates wants to be among the largest hydrogen producers in the world by 2031, Abu Dhabi National said.

Toyota, under its former longtime chief executive, Akio Toyoda, has taken a more gradual approach to electric-vehicle production than many legacy automakers, saying it represented a “silent majority” in the industry who looked on a fast transition from the internal combustion engine to electric as unwise. His successor, Koji Sato, though, has said he’ll move Toyota to an “EV-first mindset.”
