New research shows electric-vehicle charging safety concerns could be another factor hindering EV adoption.

The Geotab findings indicate 33% of U.S. women are considering EVs for their next vehicle purchase, though 72% of U.S. EV owners are men. Among polled U.S. women, 43% said they have safety concerns about EV charging stations, and 40% said availability of safe stations makes a difference in their decision to go electric. Similar concerns were expressed by Canadian women.

“The lack of consistency in charging infrastructure along with concerns for personal safety may help explain in part, why women make up a minority of electric vehicle owners,” said Geotab Vice President, Connected Car & Platform Solutions Sherry Calkins.

As other studies have shown, the poll found younger buyers are more likely to lean toward switching from gas-powered vehicles. Those 18 to 34 show the most interest in EVs – 53% in the U.S. strongly desiring electric models.
