More than 1.4 million vehicles made by Honda are being reviewed by a federal safety regulator for engine failure risk.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said it’s gotten 173 owner reports of failing connecting rod bearings in Hondas and Acuras with 3.5-liter V6 engines. The incidents included one reported crash but no injuries.

The reports bear resemblance to a problem that a November 2023 recall was designed to address, but those being investigated weren’t included in the recall, the agency said.

Those repaired in the recall had a crankshaft manufacturing defect that led to premature wearing and failure of the connecting rod bearing.

Being reviewed in the probe are nearly 1,420,000 among the following models:

  • 2018 to 2020 Acura TLX

  • 2016 to 2020 Acura MDX

  • 2016 to 2020 Honda Pilot

  • 2018 to 2020 Honda Odyssey

  • 2017 to 2019 Honda Ridgeline

The agency is working to determine the severity of the potential defect in the vehicles not included in the earlier recall, including reviewing the extent of the recall.
